# github.com llms.txt

In short

github.com serves a 28 KB llms.txt with 12 H2 sections and 117 links, graded A on the llmstxt.org structure (6 of 6 checks). It passes every check. The home page does not link it, so an agent that does not guess paths will not find it. An llms-full.txt is served too. Read 4 November 2026.

## How to use

To retrieve full article content, page lists, or search results programmatically, please use the APIs below. To find a specific article, use the **Search API** with a query. To browse all available pages, use the **Page List API** to get a list of paths, then fetch individual articles with the **Article API**. The `/api/article/body` endpoint returns markdown, ideal for LLM consumption. These APIs return structured markdown and JSON and are the preferred way for LLMs and automated tools to access GitHub documentation.

* [Versions API](https://docs.github.com/api/pagelist/versions): Lists all available documentation versions.
* [Languages API](https://docs.github.com/api/pagelist/languages): Lists all available languages.
* [Page List API](https://docs.github.com/api/pagelist/en/free-pro-team@latest): Returns every docs page path for a given language and version.
* [Article API](https://docs.github.com/api/article): Returns the full rendered content and context of any docs page as JSON. Example: `curl "https://docs.github.com/api/article?pathname=/en/get-started/start-your-journey/what-is-github"`
* [Article Body API](https://docs.github.com/api/article/body): Returns the full rendered content of any docs page as markdown. Example: `curl "https://docs.github.com/api/article/body?pathname=/en/get-started/start-your-journey/what-is-github"`
* [Search API](https://docs.github.com/api/search/v1): Search across all docs content. Example: `curl "https://docs.github.com/api/search/v1?query=actions&language=en&version=free-pro-team@latest"`
* [GitHub MCP server](https://github.com/github/github-mcp-server): For agents that connect via Model Context Protocol, the GitHub MCP server provides tools for working with GitHub itself: repositories, issues, pull requests, workflows, and code. It does not currently include docs search.

## Grade against the llmstxt.org structure

The file passes all six checks. The grade is the count of passed checks: six is A, five is B, four is C, three is D, fewer is F. It measures structure only. Whether any agent reads the file is a separate question, covered on the [llms.txt reference](https://agentreadyhtml.com/llms-txt/).

| Check | Result | Detail |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starts with an H1 naming the site or project | Pass | H1: GitHub |
| Has a blockquote summary under the H1 | Pass | Blockquote summary found. |
| Has at least one H2 section that lists links | Pass | 12 H2 sections, 12 with links. |
| At least 80 percent of links point at the same site | Pass | 117 of 117 links stay on github.com (100 percent). |
| Under 100 KB | Pass | 28650 bytes as served. |
| Plain markdown, no HTML | Pass | No HTML document markers in the body. |

## Ora's cached score

Ora's cached report for github.com gives it **65 of 100, grade C**, scanned on 1 November 2026. Its Access layer, which holds the read-layer checks below, scored 37 of 58 check points. Read from GET ora.ai/api/score/github.com on 5 November 2026. The score is Ora's, not this site's, and the structure grade above is a different measure: it grades the llms.txt file against the llmstxt.org proposal, while Ora's score covers the whole site. [Ora's report for github.com](https://ora.ai/score/github.com?utm_source=agentreadyhtml.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=index-entry) has every layer.

## Linking and the companion file

The home page of github.com does not link the file in its HTML. Ora's lab found (2026-10-19) that 86 percent of llms.txt fetches by agents arrived through a link, so an unlinked file is mostly a file nobody opens. An llms-full.txt is served at the same root.

## How it compares

At 28 KB the file is larger than 85 percent of the 2,529 plain-text llms.txt files in this edition, and its 117 links put it ahead of 82 percent of them on link count. The home page declares no generator. Size bucket: 10 to 50 KB. Tranco rank 34. Category: Developer Tools.

Why it is in the index: Top-50 domain file with an llms-full.txt companion. Owner as listed: GitHub.
