# Mintlify: what an agent reads

In short

Mintlify does not publish the llms.txt behind a fully authenticated site to tools that cannot sign in. Mintlify totals 15 of 16 on the eight numeric keys, from cited documentation read 4 November 2026. It also does not cap llms-full.txt size; the 100,000 character split applies to llms.txt only.

**rubric.txt** mintlify

```text
initial_html_by_default  = 2
real_status_codes        = 2
llms_txt_generation      = 2
llms_txt_linking         = 2
markdown_negotiation     = 2
jsonld_output            = 1
openapi_exposure         = 2
fenced_code              = 2
total                    = 15 of 16
```

**Mintlify** Docs platform, Mintlify

Hosted docs platform that generates llms.txt, llms-full.txt and a markdown twin of every page, answers Accept: text/markdown, and publishes an agent score for docs.

Work left to the developer: Low: write a description in each page frontmatter so llms.txt entries carry one.

## The nine scores

| Key | Score | Evidence | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content in the initial HTML | 2, on by default | Hosted pages are served as HTML with the content present; mintlify.com returned its H1 to a plain fetch. Observed on the vendor's own site with a plain fetch on 2026-11-04; the vendor's own site may not use default settings. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export, 2026-11-04 |
| Real status codes | 2, on by default | Documented 404 status for missing markdown pages; a made-up path on mintlify.com returned 404. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export, 2026-11-04 |
| llms.txt generation | 2, on by default | llms.txt and llms-full.txt generated by default for every project. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt, 2026-11-04 |
| llms.txt linking | 2, on by default | Advertised through an HTTP Link header and X-Llms-Txt on every response. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt, 2026-11-04 |
| Markdown on request | 2, on by default | Accept: text/markdown and Accept: text/plain both return markdown on the page URL. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export, 2026-11-04 |
| JSON-LD output | 1, with setup | JSON-LD output is not described on the AI pages read; treated as configuration-dependent until a test build confirms it. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export, 2026-11-04 |
| OpenAPI exposure | 2, on by default | llms.txt lists links to OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specs when the docs include them. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt, 2026-11-04 |
| Fenced, tagged code | 2, on by default | Markdown export renders code as markdown; MDX code blocks carry a language. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export, 2026-11-04 |
| Work left to the developer | | Low: write a description in each page frontmatter so llms.txt entries carry one. Pages without a description field appear in llms.txt without one. Not test-built: hosting needs a Mintlify account. Score from the documentation page cited, read 2026-11-04. | mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt, 2026-11-04 |

## Test build

Not test-built: the scores above come from the documentation pages cited in each row, read 4 November 2026, because the platform needs an account or a paid plan. The reason is in each evidence cell.

## What the documentation says

Each statement below carries its source and the date read. Statements a vendor makes about itself are labelled as vendor claims.

- Mintlify hosts an llms.txt at the root of every docs project, lists every page, and keeps it current without maintenance; a custom llms.txt can replace it. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt), read 4 November 2026.
- Mintlify also serves the file at /.well-known/llms.txt and advertises llms.txt, llms-full.txt, the API catalog, MCP server card and agent card in an HTTP Link header, plus an X-Llms-Txt header. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt), read 4 November 2026.
- Generated llms.txt indexes are capped at 100,000 characters; larger sites get a directory file with split indexes under /\_llms/, and no page is dropped. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt), read 4 November 2026.
- Adding .md to any page URL returns a markdown version, and a request with Accept: text/markdown or Accept: text/plain on the normal URL returns markdown instead of HTML. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export), read 4 November 2026.
- Markdown served at a .md URL carries X-Robots-Tag: noindex, while markdown served on the normal URL through the Accept header does not. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export), read 4 November 2026.
- A request for a markdown page that does not exist returns a 404 with a markdown body that links llms.txt, llms-full.txt and up to three related pages. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/markdown-export), read 4 November 2026.
- Page descriptions in llms.txt come from the frontmatter description field, truncated at 300 characters. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/ai/llmstxt), read 4 November 2026.
- mintlify.com/score scores docs sites the way an agent sees them and is built on the Agent-Friendly Documentation (AFDocs) spec; its leaderboard on 2026-11-04 listed Mintlify itself at 100. \[vendor claim\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/score), read 4 November 2026.
-   Changelog of 2026-08-28: the root llms.txt now links the per-section indexes under /\_llms. \[primary source, 2026-08-28\] [source](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/changelog), read 4 November 2026.

## What it does not do

- Does not publish the llms.txt behind a fully authenticated site to tools that cannot sign in.
- Does not cap llms-full.txt size; the 100,000 character split applies to llms.txt only.
