# GitBook: vendor profile

In short

GitBook pre-renders published sites on the server and gives each an MCP server and a paginated llms-full.txt. A .md address that did not exist under gitbook.com/docs came back 200 with a Page Not Found body on 2026-11-05. The Free plan costs $0 a site.

## At a glance

**standards.txt** gitbook

```text
llms-txt               = supports
markdown-negotiation   = no statement
markdown-twin          = supports
initial-html           = supports
real-404               = partial
vary-accept            = no statement
```

3 supports, 1 partial or announced, 2 no statement.

**GitBook** Docs platform

GitBook is a hosted docs platform whose published sites are pre-rendered on the server and ship .md copies, llms.txt, llms-full.txt and an MCP server, with a Broken links report that turns 404 traffic into redirect suggestions.

## What it does for this layer

- GitBook's SEO docs say published HTML is pre-rendered server-side so crawlers need no JavaScript, and every published page is cached and served through a global CDN. \[primary source\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook builds a sitemap for every published site that is not set to unlisted and serves it at /sitemap-pages.xml under the site home URL. \[primary source\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo), read 5 November 2026.
- Moving or renaming a GitBook page creates an automatic HTTP 307 redirect from the old URL to the new one. \[primary source\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook sets canonical URLs and fills meta and Open Graph descriptions from each page description, and it does not generate keyword meta tags at all. \[primary source\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook's Free plan costs $0 per site a month for one user and already lists LLM optimizations, while custom domains and site redirects start on Essential. \[primary source, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/account-and-billing/plans), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook charges $65 per site a month for Essential and $249 for Ultimate on annual billing, or $79 and $299 monthly, with 2,000 and 10,000 AI credits a month. \[primary source, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/account-and-billing/plans), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook's Broken links report, a beta on the Ultimate plan, reads 30 days of 404 traffic, keeps URLs hit at least three times and suggests redirects for the 60 most-visited. \[primary source\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/analytics/broken-links), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook's changelog of 2026-10-21 extended Broken links to outbound links, rechecking links to other websites and naming the failure, such as a dead domain or a timeout. \[primary source, 2026-10-21\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/changelog), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook's changelog of 2026-09-30 says published sites now send Markdown to the ChatGPT Search crawler. \[primary source, 2026-09-30\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/changelog), read 5 November 2026.
- Since GitBook's 2026-09-30 release, each part of a paginated llms-full.txt names its part number at the top and links the previous and next parts. \[primary source, 2026-09-30\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/changelog), read 5 November 2026.
- GitBook's changelog of 2026-07-29 added an askQuestion tool to published-site MCP servers with AI enabled, next to the ask query parameter that markdown routes already took. \[primary source, 2026-07-29\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/changelog), read 5 November 2026.
- A curl GET of a made-up .md path under gitbook.com/docs on 2026-11-05 returned HTTP 200 text/markdown with a Page Not Found body, while the same path without .md returned 404. \[observed, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/getting-started/llm-ready-docs), read 5 November 2026.
- On 2026-11-05 gitbook.com/docs sent Vary with Accept and an x-robots-tag: noindex only on the markdown answer; the HTML answer for the same URL listed Next.js router headers and accept-encoding but no Accept. \[observed, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/getting-started/llm-ready-docs), read 5 November 2026.
- The initial HTML of gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo carried no application/ld+json block when fetched with curl on 2026-11-05. \[observed, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://gitbook.com/docs/publish/seo), read 5 November 2026.

## Standards

| Standard | Status | What the vendor's pages say | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| llms-txt | supports | The LLM-ready docs page lists llms.txt and llms-full.txt among the formats GitBook publishes on its own for each site. | source |
| markdown-negotiation | no statement | No statement on Accept: text/markdown found in the LLM-ready docs page, which describes .md URLs; a curl with that header on 2026-11-05 did get text/markdown. | source |
| markdown-twin | supports | GitBook's LLM-ready docs page documents a Markdown copy of each published page at the page URL plus .md. | source |
| initial-html | supports | HTML is pre-rendered server-side so crawlers do not need JavaScript. | source |
| real-404 | partial | HTML paths that do not exist return 404 and feed the Broken links report, but a made-up .md path returned 200 text/markdown on 2026-11-05. | source |
| vary-accept | no statement | No statement on Vary found in the LLM-ready or SEO docs; on 2026-11-05 the markdown answer listed Accept in Vary and the HTML answer did not. | source |

| /llms.txt at the host root | HTTP 200, text/plain, 15 KB, starts with an H1 | 2026-11-05 |
| A made-up path | HTTP 404 | 2026-11-05 |
| Ora score, cached | 86, grade A | 2026-11-01 |
| Cloudflare keyless scan | 67, L5 Agent-Native | 2026-11-05 |
| Shared crawl row | Tranco rank 7,432; home page HTTP 200; H1 in the HTML: yes; 1,602 words; JSON-LD types: Organization, WebSite, SoftwareApplication; answers markdown: yes; made-up path HTTP 404; llms.txt valid: yes | 2026-11-04 |

## What it does not do

- A missing .md URL on a GitBook site answers 200 with a Page Not Found markdown body, so an agent that trusts status codes reads it as a real page.
- Broken links redirect suggestions and AI Assistant Chat are not on GitBook's Free or Essential plans; both sit on Ultimate.
- GitBook's SEO page describes canonical, Open Graph and sitemap output but no JSON-LD, and the gitbook.com/docs SEO page itself had no ld+json block.
