# Jekyll: vendor profile

In short

Every .md source page becomes .html in \_site, so no markdown copy exists at any URL unless it is copied by hand. Outside GitHub Pages and WEBrick, the 404.html needs server configuration before it carries a 404 status. jekyllrb.com returned 404 for /llms.txt and for a made-up path on 2026-11-05. Jekyll is free under the MIT licence.

## At a glance

**standards.txt** jekyll

```text
llms-txt               = no statement
markdown-negotiation   = no statement
markdown-twin          = no statement
initial-html           = supports
real-404               = partial
vary-accept            = no statement
```

1 supports, 1 partial or announced, 4 no statement.

**Jekyll** Framework

Jekyll is a Ruby static site generator and the engine behind GitHub Pages. It turns Markdown and Liquid templates into plain HTML files; sitemaps and JSON-LD come from the jekyll-sitemap and jekyll-seo-tag plugins.

## What it does for this layer

- The Jekyll docs describe it as a static site generator that turns text in a markup language plus layouts into a static website. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/docs/), read 5 November 2026.
- The Jekyll README says it renders Markdown and Liquid into a complete static site for Apache, Nginx or another server, and that Jekyll is the engine behind GitHub Pages. \[primary source\] [source](https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll), read 5 November 2026.
- Jekyll's quickstart installs the jekyll and bundler gems, scaffolds a site with \`jekyll new myblog\` and needs Ruby 2.7.0 or higher. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/docs/), read 5 November 2026.
- Jekyll 4.4.1, a patch restoring globbed path matching in front matter defaults, was announced on jekyllrb.com on 29 January 2025. \[primary source, 2025-01-29\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/news/2025/01/29/jekyll-4-4-1-released/), read 5 November 2026.
- On 2026-11-05 the newest entry in the jekyllrb.com news list was still the Jekyll 4.4.1 release, and the site header showed v4.4.1. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/news/), read 5 November 2026.
- Jekyll's custom 404 tutorial says a 404.html at the root of \_site is served automatically by GitHub Pages and by the local WEBrick server. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/tutorials/custom-404-page/), read 5 November 2026.
- For Apache and Nginx hosts, the Jekyll 404 tutorial adds ErrorDocument 404 /404.html to .htaccess or an error\_page 404 rule in the nginx server block. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/tutorials/custom-404-page/), read 5 November 2026.
- Minima is the theme \`jekyll new\` installs, and its README says it comes with the jekyll-seo-tag plugin preinstalled. \[primary source\] [source](https://github.com/jekyll/minima), read 5 November 2026.
- The jekyll-seo-tag plugin adds title, description, canonical URL, Open Graph and Twitter tags, plus JSON-LD site and post metadata. \[primary source\] [source](https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll-seo-tag), read 5 November 2026.
- The jekyll-sitemap plugin writes a sitemaps.org sitemap once it is listed under plugins in \_config.yml; the GitHub Pages gem ignores it if it appears only in the Gemfile. \[primary source\] [source](https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll-sitemap), read 5 November 2026.
- Setting safe: true in a Jekyll \_config.yml turns off all plugins, so jekyll-sitemap writes no sitemap.xml in that mode. \[primary source\] [source](https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll-sitemap), read 5 November 2026.
- jekyllrb.com says Jekyll is maintained by a core team of volunteers, and the jekyll/jekyll repository is MIT licensed. \[primary source\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/tutorials/custom-404-page/), read 5 November 2026.
-   On 2026-11-05 jekyllrb.com returned 404 for /llms.txt and for a made-up path, and answered Accept: text/markdown on the home page with text/html. \[observed, 2026-11-05\] [source](https://jekyllrb.com/), read 5 November 2026.

## Products and plans

| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Jekyll | Open source Ruby static site generator that turns Markdown and Liquid templates into static HTML; it powers GitHub Pages. | Free, open source; MIT license | 2026-11-05 | source |

## Standards

| Standard | Status | What the vendor's pages say | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| llms-txt | no statement | No statement found in the Jekyll docs, plugins page, news list or the jekyll-seo-tag and jekyll-sitemap READMEs, and the jekyllrb.com site has no llms.txt of its own. | none |
| markdown-negotiation | no statement | No statement found in the Jekyll quickstart or custom 404 tutorial; Jekyll writes static files to _site and the web server decides content types. | none |
| markdown-twin | no statement | No statement found in the Jekyll quickstart or plugin READMEs; Markdown sources are converted to .html files in _site. | none |
| initial-html | supports | The Jekyll quickstart calls it a static site generator that uses layouts to create a static website, so pages ship as complete HTML. | source |
| real-404 | partial | 404.html is served automatically by GitHub Pages and WEBrick; Apache and Nginx need ErrorDocument or error_page rules per the tutorial. | source |
| vary-accept | no statement | No statement found in the Jekyll quickstart, 404 tutorial or plugin READMEs about Vary or content negotiation. | none |

## Checks on its own site

| /llms.txt at the host root | HTTP 404, text/html, 5.3 KB | 2026-11-05 |
| A made-up path | HTTP 404 | 2026-11-05 |
| Ora score, cached | Not available: GET /api/score returned 404 DOMAIN_NOT_SCANNED | 2026-11-05 |
| Cloudflare keyless scan | 7, L0 Not Ready | 2026-11-05 |

## What it does not do

- Jekyll keeps no markdown copy in \_site, since every .md source page is converted to an .html file, so a page's markdown is not reachable at a URL unless you copy it as a static file.
- Jekyll core writes no sitemap.xml or JSON-LD; both come from the jekyll-sitemap and jekyll-seo-tag plugins, which stop working under safe: true.
