# MkDocs: vendor profile

In short

MkDocs turns Markdown and one mkdocs.yml into HTML pages with a 404.html and a compressed sitemap, and writes no llms.txt or per-page Markdown copy. The newest release, 1.6.1, dates from 2024-08-30. www.mkdocs.org answered a markdown request with 72,736 bytes of HTML, and GitHub Pages uses the 404.html only on a custom domain.

## What it does for this layer

- MkDocs builds a static documentation site from Markdown source files configured by a single YAML file. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/), read 5 November 2026.
- Every MkDocs build includes a 404.html in the build directory. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/deploying-your-docs/), read 5 November 2026.
- MkDocs warns that GitHub Pages picks up its 404.html automatically only on a custom domain, and other servers need their own configuration to use it. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/deploying-your-docs/), read 5 November 2026.
- MkDocs's site\_url, null by default, adds a canonical link tag to the head of each HTML page. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/configuration/), read 5 November 2026.
- use\_directory\_urls defaults to true in MkDocs, so a page such as about.md is published as about/index.html with a trailing-slash URL. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/configuration/), read 5 November 2026.
- MkDocs turns on its bundled search plugin by default, but any plugins list in mkdocs.yml replaces the defaults, so search must be listed again. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/configuration/), read 5 November 2026.
- MkDocs 1.6.0 (2024-04-20) made sitemap.xml.gz change at most once per day instead of on every build. \[primary source, 2024-04-20\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/about/release-notes/), read 5 November 2026.
- The MkDocs release notes still list 1.6.1 of 2024-08-30 as the newest version on 2026-11-05. \[primary source, 2024-08-30\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/about/release-notes/), read 5 November 2026.
- The Material for MkDocs team wrote on 2026-02-18 that MkDocs 1.x is unmaintained, with no releases in the 18 months before, and that MkDocs 2.0 was still a pre-release. \[secondary source, 2026-02-18\] [source](https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/blog/), read 5 November 2026.
- MkDocs is distributed under a BSD licence, copyright 2014 Tom Christie. \[primary source\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/about/license/), read 5 November 2026.
- www.mkdocs.org returned a 404 HTML page for /llms.txt on 2026-11-05 while /sitemap.xml and /sitemap.xml.gz both answered 200. \[observed\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/configuration/), read 5 November 2026.
- Requested with Accept: text/markdown on 2026-11-05, the MkDocs configuration page on www.mkdocs.org still came back as 72,736 bytes of HTML. \[observed\] [source](https://www.mkdocs.org/user-guide/configuration/), read 5 November 2026.

## What it does not do

- MkDocs core generates no llms.txt and no per-page Markdown copy; projects add the third-party mkdocs-llmstxt plugin for that.
