# ReadMe: vendor profile

In short

ReadMe builds llms.txt and .md copies, but an admin has to switch on Markdown for Agents before Accept: text/markdown returns markdown. docs.readme.com answered a missing page with a 404 and a 430-byte markdown body. New projects get an MCP server by default. Starter is free, and Pro is $250 a month.

## At a glance

**standards.txt** readme

```text
llms-txt               = supports
markdown-negotiation   = partial
markdown-twin          = supports
initial-html           = no statement
real-404               = supports
vary-accept            = no statement
```

3 supports, 1 partial or announced, 2 no statement.

**ReadMe** Docs platform

ReadMe is a hosted API docs hub that builds llms.txt from the sidebar, serves .md copies of pages, sends markdown on Accept: text/markdown once Markdown for Agents is switched on, and gives paid plans custom 404 pages and redirects.

## What it does for this layer

- ReadMe's AI Discoverability release of 2026-08-03 brought agent link headers and content signals and turned on an MCP server by default for new projects. \[primary source, 2026-08-03\] [source](https://docs.readme.com/main/changelog/ai-discoverability), read 5 November 2026.

- ReadMe's generic 404 page has a Suggest similar pages toggle, on by default, that shows up to three matching links in the first page load without an extra client request. \[primary source\] [source](https://docs.readme.com/main/docs/error-pages), read 5 November 2026.

- Once a ReadMe project has a custom domain, visitors to its original readme.io subdomain are redirected to that domain, and links to the main version path redirect to the unversioned URL. \[primary source\] [source](https://docs.readme.com/main/docs/redirect-scenarios), read 5 November 2026.
- ReadMe's technical FAQ says pages are cached for 15 minutes for logged-out readers, while signed-in users always get the latest content. \[primary source\] [source](https://docs.readme.com/main/docs/technical-faq), read 5 November 2026.

## What it does not do

- Markdown for Agents is a switch in AI Discoverability, so a ReadMe project that never flips it keeps sending HTML to agents asking for markdown.
- ReadMe cannot redirect a URL that still has a page behind it; its redirect list only catches paths that would otherwise 404.
