# Akismet

> Akismet is a spam detection service from Automattic. It checks comments, contact form submissions and other user-generated content against a global spam database and returns whether each one is spam. It's available as an official WordPress plugin and Drupal module, through third-party integrations for many other platforms, and as an HTTP API that any application can call with an Akismet API key.

The API lives at `https://rest.akismet.com`. The spam endpoints (`/1.1/*`) are `POST` requests with `application/x-www-form-urlencoded` parameters, sent with an API key (`api_key`) and the `blog` URL of the calling site. The account endpoints (`/1.2/*`) are `GET` requests with `api_key` in the query string. `comment-check` returns plain text `true` for spam and `false` for ham, and an `X-akismet-pro-tip: discard` header marks blatant spam that can be dropped without review.

## API

- [OpenAPI spec](https://akismet.com/openapi.yaml): Machine-readable OpenAPI 3 description of every endpoint, parameter and response
- [Getting started](https://akismet.com/developers/getting-started/): Get an API key and make a first request
- [Key verification](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/key-verification/): `POST /1.1/verify-key` checks an API key is valid
- [Comment check](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/comment-check/): `POST /1.1/comment-check` asks whether a piece of content is spam
- [Submit spam](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/submit-spam-missed-spam/): `POST /1.1/submit-spam` reports spam that Akismet missed
- [Submit ham](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/submit-ham-false-positives/): `POST /1.1/submit-ham` reports legitimate content that was flagged as spam
- [Key sites activity](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/key-sites-activity/): `GET /1.2/key-sites` lists the sites using an API key and their activity
- [Usage limit](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/usage-limit/): `GET /1.2/usage-limit` shows API usage against the plan limit
- [Errors](https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/errors/): Error codes returned in the `X-akismet-alert-code` header

## Integrations

- [WordPress plugin](https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet/): Official plugin that protects WordPress comments and contact form submissions out of the box
- [Drupal module](https://www.drupal.org/project/akismet_antispam): Official module that filters Drupal comments, webforms and other user-submitted content with no custom code
- [PHP SDK](https://github.com/Automattic/akismet-sdk-php): Official PHP client library for the Akismet API
- [Contact forms](https://akismet.com/support/getting-started/using-akismet-with-your-contact-forms/): Using Akismet with Jetpack, Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms and other form plugins
