Astro: vendor profile
In short
Astro 7.0 shipped on 2026-06-22 with a Rust compiler, and 7.4 followed on 2026-10-15, but neither adds llms.txt or markdown output. On 2026-11-05 astro.build/llms.txt redirected to docs.astro.build, where the file returned 404. The Astro Technology Company joined Cloudflare on 2026-01-16, and Astro stays free under the MIT licence.

Astro Framework
Open-source framework for content sites, owned by Cloudflare since January 2026. Pages prerender to static HTML with client JavaScript stripped unless a component opts in, so the text is in the first response; sitemaps come from an add-on.

What it does for this layer
- Astro's blog announced on 2026-01-16 that The Astro Technology Company had joined Cloudflare, and that all of its full-time staff became Cloudflare employees who keep working on Astro. [primary source, 2026-01-16] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Astro's post on joining Cloudflare commits the framework to staying MIT-licensed and platform-agnostic, with continued support for deployment targets other than Cloudflare. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
- The Astro Technology Company was formed in 2021 after a funding round; its founders write that paid hosted add-ons such as Astro DB never took off, and Astro DB lives on as the database client in core. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Four months before the acquisition, on 2025-09-23, Cloudflare gave Astro a $150,000 donation and became an official hosting partner. [primary source, 2025-09-23] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Astro 6.0 shipped on 2026-03-10 with a built-in Fonts API, a Content Security Policy API and live content collections, and its dev server can now run the production runtime, such as Cloudflare's workerd, through Vite's Environment API. [primary source, 2026-03-10] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Astro 7.0 (2026-06-22) rewrote the .astro compiler in Rust and made Satteri, a Rust Markdown and MDX processor, the default pipeline; projects relying on remark or rehype plugins switch to @astrojs/markdown-remark. [primary source, 2026-06-22] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Before Astro 7.4 (2026-10-15), a server or worker entrypoint built from the pages() handler in astro/fetch or astro/hono answered unmatched URLs with an empty 404 body; the new notFound() handler serves the site's 404.astro page instead. [primary source, 2026-10-15] source, read 5 November 2026.
- For each redirect in a static build, Astro writes a small HTML page with a meta refresh tag, so on a plain static host an agent gets a page rather than a 3xx response; Astro 7.4 added experimental.redirectPage and src/pages/3xx.astro to restyle that page. [primary source, 2026-10-15] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Astro renders UI components from React, Vue, Svelte and similar libraries to HTML and CSS at build time and drops their client JavaScript unless the component carries a client:* directive. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Sitemaps in Astro come from the official @astrojs/sitemap integration (npx astro add sitemap), which needs the site option set to the deployed URL and then writes sitemap-index.xml plus numbered files such as sitemap-0.xml. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
- Matthew Phillips took over as Project Steward of Astro from Fred, the previous holder of the role, according to the August 2026 Astro newsletter. [primary source, 2026-08-31] source, read 5 November 2026.
- On 2026-11-05 the 302 from astro.build/llms.txt pointed at docs.astro.build/llms.txt, so an agent following it ended on a 404; llms-full.txt and llms-small.txt on the docs host also returned 404, and docs pages answered Accept: text/markdown with text/html. [observed, 2026-11-05] source, read 5 November 2026.

- Astro's default build writes no llms.txt and no markdown copy of a page, and the Astro 7.0 and 7.4 release posts add neither despite the Cloudflare ownership.
