Jekyll: vendor profile

In short

Every .md source page becomes .html in _site, so no markdown copy exists at any URL unless it is copied by hand. Outside GitHub Pages and WEBrick, the 404.html needs server configuration before it carries a 404 status. jekyllrb.com returned 404 for /llms.txt and for a made-up path on 2026-11-05. Jekyll is free under the MIT licence.

Jekyll Framework

Jekyll is a Ruby static site generator and the engine behind GitHub Pages. It turns Markdown and Liquid templates into plain HTML files; sitemaps and JSON-LD come from the jekyll-sitemap and jekyll-seo-tag plugins.

What it does for this layer

  • The Jekyll docs describe it as a static site generator that turns text in a markup language plus layouts into a static website. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • The Jekyll README says it renders Markdown and Liquid into a complete static site for Apache, Nginx or another server, and that Jekyll is the engine behind GitHub Pages. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • Jekyll's quickstart installs the jekyll and bundler gems, scaffolds a site with `jekyll new myblog` and needs Ruby 2.7.0 or higher. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • Jekyll 4.4.1, a patch restoring globbed path matching in front matter defaults, was announced on jekyllrb.com on 29 January 2025. [primary source, 2025-01-29] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • On 2026-11-05 the newest entry in the jekyllrb.com news list was still the Jekyll 4.4.1 release, and the site header showed v4.4.1. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • Jekyll's custom 404 tutorial says a 404.html at the root of _site is served automatically by GitHub Pages and by the local WEBrick server. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • For Apache and Nginx hosts, the Jekyll 404 tutorial adds ErrorDocument 404 /404.html to .htaccess or an error_page 404 rule in the nginx server block. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • Minima is the theme `jekyll new` installs, and its README says it comes with the jekyll-seo-tag plugin preinstalled. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.

  • Setting safe: true in a Jekyll _config.yml turns off all plugins, so jekyll-sitemap writes no sitemap.xml in that mode. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.
  • jekyllrb.com says Jekyll is maintained by a core team of volunteers, and the jekyll/jekyll repository is MIT licensed. [primary source] source, read 5 November 2026.

What it does not do

  • Jekyll keeps no markdown copy in _site, since every .md source page is converted to an .html file, so a page's markdown is not reachable at a URL unless you copy it as a static file.
  • Jekyll core writes no sitemap.xml or JSON-LD; both come from the jekyll-sitemap and jekyll-seo-tag plugins, which stop working under safe: true.
